The Sun with sunspots, by Koen Scammell, Y5, Fernhurst Junior School

The Sun is our star. It is the centre of our solar system and provides all the light and heat for the Earth and other planets.

Almost all (99.86%) of the mass of the solar system is in the Sun. Most of this is hydrogen plasma, which is fusing into helium in the core.

The core of the Sun has a temperature of close to 15.7 million degrees, while the visible surface is at about 6000 degrees. Sunspots are slightly cooler dark spots.
